ESE FAQs

To be eligible for the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized university. The exam is mainly taken by students from four major engineering branches: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics Engineering.

The online application process for the ESE exam typically begins in September each year. Candidates can register by visiting the official UPSC website and clicking on the ‘Apply Online’ link.

ESE and IES refer to the same exam. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), and the candidates selected through this exam are appointed as Class ‘A’ officers, commonly known as Indian Engineering Services (IES) officers.

To appear for the ESE exam, a candidate must be at least 21 years old and should not be older than 30 years, as per the date specified in that year’s UPSC ESE notification. However, candidates belonging to certain categories are eligible for relaxation in the upper age limit.

ESE (Engineering Services Examination) is for recruitment in government departments, while IES refers to the Indian Engineering Services, which is the result of clearing the ESE exam.
GATE FAQs
